What an incredible story! I love that there are people within our community who a silently kicking goals in the background and we don’t even know it!
Meet Jindi Li, in 2018 Jindi attended to the Seldex workshop titled “12-step plan how to sell more products” hosted by Brenton, Nat Howe and myself in Sydney.
At that time, Jindi was a newly single mother with two young kids, yet her determination to pursue her photography dreams was unwavering. Nothing could deter her from seizing the opportunity to learn, even if it meant bringing her child along to the workshop.
She knew no one in the industry, nothing about products, the value of photography or selling artwork! She came expected and was determined to turn her passion into a career that could support her young family.
Fast forward to 2024, and Jindi has established a thriving studio in Sydney, complete with a supportive team. Her consistent sales range between $3,000 to $5,000, with her highest recent sale reaching an impressive $20,000. Not only has she showcased a “David Broomly” hand-painted portrait in a gallery, but she has also been featured in interviews highlighting her success as a Chinese woman building a business in Australia.
However, Jindi’s journey was not without its challenges. As a Chinese Australian, she initially struggled to gain traction in the Australian market. A well-meaning business advisor once suggested that she remove her image to avoid judgment based on her ethnic background.
Yet, Jindi remained true to herself, embracing her authenticity. Leveraging platforms like “WeChat” and “Red Book,” she connected with numerous Chinese Australians, ultimately building her business through word-of-mouth referrals, backed by her commitment to quality and service.
Her story underscores the importance of trusting the process and persevering over time. I love that every year she turns up to the Sydney industry nights connects with people and suppliers and undoubtedly attends my workshop year after year!
Jindi Li, thank you for simply being yourself and inspiring us all.
