“Don’t know the outcome, just the journey.”
That’s one of Bruce Moyle’s guiding philosophies when it comes to creating artwork—and it’s exactly what makes his work so remarkable.
Bruce is one of Australia’s most awarded creative portrait photographers, known for pushing boundaries and breaking all the rules in pursuit of something truly original. While many photographers approach a session with a strict plan, Bruce prefers to let creativity lead the way. He might start with an idea in mind, but what comes out in camera is often completely unexpected. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t…but when it does, it’s pure magic.
In this interview, Bruce shares two powerful takeaways for portrait and wedding photographers:
- Be creative. Play with light, colour, and movement to create work that no one has ever seen before. This is what sets you apart from the crowd.
- Save time for play. Always get the safe shots your client needs first, then spend the last 5 – 15 minutes experimenting. You may surprise yourself, and your clients, with something extraordinary.
Trends come and go, and once a certain style becomes mainstream, it quickly loses its impact. Bruce’s approach is about staying ahead, standing out, and most importantly enjoying the process.
Because at the end of the day, you never really know what the image will turn out like… and that’s the beauty of it.
